In 1890, the city held 11,500 people in an area that covered two square miles. But a man named Edward Dilworth Latta changed that. He converted some vacant land into a place called Latta Park a little ways out of town, then laid trolley tracks for people to get there and enjoy the attractions the park offered. They were also attracted to the adjoining lots Mr. Latta had for sale. And in a very short time Charlotte had its first suburb, a neighborhood called Dilworth.
![]() A little over 20 years later, George Stephens with the help of landscape architect, John Nolen, turned 1200 acres of treeless farmland off Providence Road into another magnificent suburban community, and named it Myers Park. In 1922, those two neighborhoods became fertile ground for H.Y. Dunaway. He started his real estate business then, and because of his reputation for honesty and integrity he was successful from the beginning. A neighborhood called Eastover added to that success. Edward Colville Griffith wanted a community that was every bit as eloquent as the other two, and in the late 1920’s beautiful homes began rising there, scarcely a stone’s throw from Myers Park. As the city grew to include Foxcroft, Cotswold and other fine neighborhoods, so too did the real estate company. And it has been growing ever since. It’s now in its third generation of Dunaway ownership. And because the Dunaways are Charlotte born and bred, no other real estate company can match their local knowledge, or their reputation for excellent service. What’s interesting to note is that many of the very same homes bought and sold through H.Y. Dunaway himself so long ago are now being re-bought and re-sold with the help of today’s Dunaway family and agents. True, the company employs new tools such as the internet and relocation capabilities, but all the old values of honesty and trustworthiness instilled by Mr. Dunaway remain as they were. If this sounds like the kind of company you’d like to do business with, talk with Dunaway – it will be a friendly conversation. |
